Sculpture Surfing

Johan Muyle

15 December – 20 January 2019

Johan Muyle is a sculptor active in the field of contemporary art since 1983. Since 1992 he has dedicated himself to customising Harley Davidsons. Their complexity is reflected in his numerous preparatory drawings.

The exhibition presents four of Muyle's motorcycles: a chopper - Sioux in Paradise also titled Now Futur (2016), a bobber - Memento Mori (2010), a Heritage - No More Heroes (2008 – 2018) and a fatboy - Burnout Machine (2010 – 2017).

The title of the exhibition refers to the artist's performance Sculpture Surfing, a reference to moto surfing - riding a bike while standing up and without using the handlebars.

Each one of Muyle's customised motorcycles takes a long time to make, from a year to several years. Even though their appearance and functionality are preserved, each element has been subject to modification and unique craftsmanship.

Sculpture Surfing is also the title of Muyle's new book published by Editions du Caïd, which will be launched on the night of the opening.

Opening hours: Friday to Sunday between 1– 6pm
Preview: Friday, 14 December between 5 – 9pm
Exhibition: 15 December 2018 – 20 January 2019
